Just got back from Martin "Marty" Mauser Supremebert, Ping Pong Extraordinaire

Great movie, everything was very well done. Pacing was a little intense, moved very quickly.

I don't think I liked it very much.
Hard for me personally to watch 2 and a half hours of some dickhead being an asshole and making literally every bad choice possible.

Great movie though.

I finally watched John and the Hole and it sucked.
Just absolute dogshit.
It was the worst hey here's a short story that we're going to stretch into a feature-length.
By two thirds in I was like yeah these people should die, I'm not even sure what kind of life they can patch together.

go (1999)

cool no doubt song in the end credits i hadn't heard before
anyway i really disliked this movie until part 3 which i watched tonight and somehow that made me like it a bit more
katie holmes is basically her dawson's creek character and not very good at acting in this, the british character is beyond annoying but i suspect this schtick was funny in the 90s

i did like the idea of them all starting out at the grocery store, and it's christmas, but i dunno mostly didn't like how stupid the characters were
even william fichtner was great and a strong point, and he nails his role and really helped boost part 3, but in the end his joke is the throwaway gag about why they invited them there i dunno seemed like lazy writing
mellisa mcarthy is in this for 30 seconds

overall really bad but maybe watchable in '99

My 9yo is in a play of Wizard of Oz and as a result he decided he wants to read all the books form like 150 years ago so he's 5 books into the series right now and wanted to watch Return to Oz (1985).

I was skeptical because I have memories of being terrified of that movie, along with everyone else in Gen X, and then all us olds spent the next 30 years talking about how terrifying it was on tumblr and something awful and whathaveyou and let me tell you after this rewatch i think we were all just playing it up for the likes.

The wheelers are stupid looking and my kids laughed at them. The heads were creepy i guess but they didn't mind. The most troublesome part for me while watching the movie is watching Tik Tok go up stairs because i was afraid the actor inside would die if he tripped and fell down.

The rock stuff was terrific. The Gnome king with his ruby slippers was an amazing twist. I hated the scarecrow too but whatever.

nice, i am glad he likes them. always nice to find a series of books you love.

i remember those being like the epitome of the "hero who is good at everything and everybody loves him" stories that was too much for me to handle even as a middle schooler

hey i could tie that topic back to dave filoni's star wars stories if that would make everyone here happy

I love that it's on Disney+.

Almost as good as when Disney made a huge acquisition and consequently the Saw movies were front and center until someone was like hey no one's coming to Disney to see Pig Head Jump Scares.

Anyway, last movie I watched was Mother Of Flies (2025) and it was pretty good witch/folk horror but I felt like I only understood about 70% of what was going on at any time, which seemed to be intentional.
Felt akin to Hagazussa (2017) or A Field In England (2013).

Hey f7t, can you give any good horror recommendations for me to watch with my daughter? I asked her to list her favorites and these came off the top of her head. I should keep a list of what she likes...

The Ring
Insidious, 1 and 3 are her favorites
Lights Out
Cobweb
Sinister
Bring Her Back (I'd probably be in trouble with her mom if she knew)
Look Away
It
The Nun
The Boy

She doesn't really like gross... at least not gratuitous grossness. She seems to like supernatural horror over gore. Nothing too sexy.

In general, I avoid jump scares, mutilation (especially fingers and teeth), and sexual violence, though I do think it's possible to pull it off artfully.

Don't tell me how old she is now, I don't think my heart could take it.

If you like Bring Her Back, Anything For Jackson (2020) could be a hit.

I'm a bit of a black sheep in my family because I do love the American The Ring over the original, but no matter how much I love Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ju-On (2002) leaves the remake in the dust.

Cobweb I thought was neat though a little weird energetically and structurally, but I love "subterranean" horror, so maybe Barbarian (2022). Also a throwaway but I watched Malignant (2021) like right after it so they're linked in my mind. Good "the double" horror story.

If she hasn't gotten into the Welcome to Derry series, it's rich with visuals and social horror and opens up the It universe.

I love Sinister so goddamn much. I love horror movies that start with curiosity and dread then turn into detective stories, only to be like "hey actually it's everything you feared and a lot worse" (Smile (2022) (only a couple jump scares and some gnarly animal harm), The Night House (2020), and (if you enjoy religious horror) The Exorcist 3 (1990) and Stigmata (1999)).

If you like emotional/atmospheric horror, El Orfanato/The Orphanage (2007) is probably my all-time favorite in this century).

I'll start a notepad as I keep thinking on this list.

Oh, A Dark Song (2016) has a weird sexual moment and a not fun snippy-snippy bit in the climactic scene, but overall it's a beautiful example of a "Grief Is The Monster" movie about how you can't let your pain let the demons in.

Oh God I laughed so much at the Monkey.
It's like that thought exercise about would you take ten million dollars but there's a snail who can kill you with a single touch and it lives forever. Like just start walking, buddy.

Also that reminded me of Caveat (2021) which also features a toy mammal beating a drum that gets people killed.

Here are some suggestions:
Good Boy
Oddity
Presence
When Evil Lurks (might be a bit much)
The Babadook
The Taking of Deborah Logan
LA Llorona
Coming Home in the Dark
Speak No Evil

Good Boy
Wait is this the Leonberg one
Or the one where a guy lures a woman into his house and she lears that he's been torturing his friend who he forced into a dog costume.
Because definitely don't do the latter.

Oddity
Fuckin' rules but kind of a brain-twisty story to follow.

Presence
Yeah. "Lived-In" horror is cool. I feel like it's getting a resurgence because of domestic anxiety and inherited problems.

When Evil Lurks (might be a bit much)
Rough one but Spanish-language horror is pretty up there in general.
I would probably toss her a pillow for the dog and goat scenes.

The Taking of Deborah Logan
This one is structured weird but you give some allowances for found footage. I feel like the reveal takes too long to unfold and then you're just dealing with an entirely different story. But everyone in it does a good job and there's no "Why did you just throw the map in the river" moment, so hey ho, good game.

LA Llorona
I haven't actually been able to finish this one. I just felt... alienated? Like there's a lot going on with bereaved women and missing children in that context and I don't know, I tend to lean pretty heavy on that stuff.

Coming Home In The Dark
Missed this so all I can offer is A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) which feels like it's a pretty different thing.

Speak No Evil
Is this the original or the American remake.
Because I liked the original but don't laugh at me I will watch James McAvoy do just about anything. It's like him, Delroy Lindo, Tom Hardy, Kate Winslet, and Angela Bassett. Chomp that scenery this is the greatest multipurpose kitchen appliance infomercial of my life.

I never bothered with the remake of Speak No Evil. The original was fine, maddeningly frustrating ending and all.

I meant the recent Good Boy - starring an actual dog.

Another good supernatural one for atmosphere and a total lack of blood is the first Woman in Black. The one with Harry Potter as the lead.

I know someone who actually saw Radcliffe in his performance in Equus. It is endlessly funny to me that people paid that much money to watch Harry Potter jerk off with horses and then stab one in the eyes.

Maybe not endlessly.

Anyway they said he was amazing.

Violent Cop. (1989)

A minimalist, slow-paced, shot flat action flick. Anyone with a phone could shoot this today.

But what makes it work is some of the best movie-editing I have ever seen.
