The Severed Sun 2024
I enjoyed it. I almost want to say it was slow, but still is a better word, and it was effective for setting the mood.
I think I like horror with religious themes the most. Which might be weird because I'm not religious at all and am admittedly super ignorant of it, but 4 sum rsn I don't have to suspend disbelief as much as I do with some other types of horror, and well I probably like seeing bad things happen to the shittier types of religious people.
for me horror just scares me way too much if there's anything supernatural, things like the grudge or the conjuring were absolutely terrifying for me lol it's like i just can't suspend disbelief but wish i could

the raid redemption (2011)
it's really gritty and the action choreography is high level good even still to this day a friend of mine was like man dredd completely ripped off the raid redemption, but i really don't think so it is a similar set up but different world different motives different stakes they're both great movies
all that jazz (1979) i posted about it earlier but it didn't post (for sum reas) but this is such a dark and painful movie i had no idea what to expect this starts with a similar set up to 8 1/2, with an artist questioning and looking back on life but in a slightly more stylized way and where 8 1/2 i would describe as warm and full of sun, all that jazz is hurting and reaching towards solaris level existentialism i see now so many movies and shows have taken from all that jazz, perhaps most notably bojack horseman an enormous amount, all with respect i think, but homage bordering on straight up re-enactment; even the opening bojack credits where it's steady cam on his face and the background is walking for him is from all that jazz but now i sound like my friend who said dredd is a complete rip off of raid redmption so there you go anyway you would think it's for the niche demographic of people who like broadway and dance but it's really for anyone who's ever been through it it's an experience and i would recommend if you're in the right mood
man, just... i just i just want to see event horizon again but with a new spin, u know? revive that feeling u got on first viewing same plot, same cast, same set just i dunno more k pop? would a musical number or dance scene hurt? eyeless sam neil set to babymetal or something work with me

smile 2
only seen this once before i forgot how good it is like i remembered that the cinematography is so good that it's like the movie is showing off how good it is, but i really didn't remember how effective it is at maintaining the perfect level of tension.
unlike most jumpscare-heavy movies, the jumps here actually have a purpose in narrative because driving the protagonist insane making them doubt what's real and what they're in control of is the whole concept, which, like, yeah, that's been done before, but the timing and execution here is just so flawless that it has you constantly on edge waiting for a smile scene but SOMEHOW still catches you by surprise when they do actually happen.
not sure if i'd put this in my top ten horror movies of all time but it would definitely take me a lot of effort to come up with ten better ones
I watched a lot of movies when I was pet-sitting at my parents last week... Got a back log of 19 last movie(s) I watched since my last post a month ago.
The Covenant It's a Guy Ritchie movie, but a war movie. Jake Gyllenhaal kills it as a sergeant in Afghanistan and the other main guy is also really good. Very good building of momentum and tension. Surprised I didn't hear more about it when it came out.

I've seen both, but getting this mixed up with 2025's Warfare now.

I was just browsing the top 100 over at the seas and saw a movie called Mercy (2026) and looked it up: a detective (Chris Pratt) accused of murdering his wife has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an advanced AI judge, and man, how does this shit even get made.
I fast forwarded through the middle part, other than that I got my money's worth.
some parts are kind of funny some parts kind of stupid the doctor at one point says (unless i'm getting mixed up w/ permutation city) you have all your memories up to the point of the operation but then almost immediately the clones become just completely different people, like he had no plan before the operation to tell himself something when he realized he's the clone? like they're somehow almost immediately resigned that they can't be with their wife or family anymore? anyway i think michael keaton's skills as an actor are underrated, not because he plays a bunch of different roles in this movie, i think most actors are capable of that, but just in general you can tell he has worked really hard at his craft

i expected to enjoy this, which i did, but i was NOT expecting it to be as funny as it was. like, it's not a comedy per se, but the balance and timing was perfect such that i never knew if something horrifying or hilarious (or both) was going to happen next. what's his name plays such a perfect slimeball i'd love to see more like this from him
About an hour long documentary from the great Errol Morris about some very interesting people from...well, Vernon, Florida.
If I remember correctly, he initially went down there on the rumor that people were chopping their limbs off for insurance money. Well, since Reagan hadn't fucked everything up yet, that was far-fetched lunacy at the time, so Mr. Morris decided to stick around and listen to the folk there, and their insane ideals and obsessions.
It felt like a Cormac McCarthy novel, some of these dry, insanely humorous stories and people. Almost hard to believe they were real, and this was a documentary.
Well worth a watch. I don't know what it is with Morris, but he just has this...ambience to his filming that makes it seem bot very real, and very not.
Dude that had almost a sexual obsession with Turkey hunting was my favorite.
british gangster movie i'd never heard of, starring bob hoskins (who i'd never heard of but maybe recognized)and helen mirren and a small part played by pierce brosnan, probably one of his first roles, as well as some other notable actors from 1980 great performances from everyone especially hoskins and mirren some shakespearean moments typical in gangster movies wasn't sure at first but the opening theme just uppercuts you into the right mood wait for the saxaphone (30 seconds in)
when the internet was so innoent and sweet and no one got murdered yet

This movie and Search For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus are kin, in my mind.
Yeah, not bad. Kind of a unique film, in that there wasn't a whole lot of conflict, and no villain, save maybe for the internal struggle and questioning of the characters.
Nicely shot. Feelgood mostly. Kind of like a Lifetime movie, but well-written and performed and all that. It's kinda nice to see just...nice people, and redemption, and kindness. Probably a great time to watch, with the world as it is.
Duvall was great. He's an interesting actor. He doesn't really show emotion with his face. He's steely. You kinda just believe his emotions through naked honesty and conviction.
