Time for a new family thread...er a thread about families

Anyway, poorly worded thread title aside, let's get the family back together.

To start, I need the combined nerd-dom of the Slor'm to help out...

This young lady needs to be swimmer of the week. You can vote once per hour and apparently, you can double tap it by voting once on wifi and once on cellular data, or once on PC and once on your phone.

pic of the request I received. Not putting her name in text for at least a modicum of privacy.

So, about my immediate family....

The boy child is officially engaged, he finally popped the question (and got the ring out of my safe where it's been for 6 months) the last week of October. Coincidently enough, it's the day he closed on his house... my baby boy bought an honest to goodness house. They're planning a 2027 date and have a budget set that's at least somewhat tolerable.

The girl child is happily living in NOLA, once she finished her internship and passed her certification exam (on the first try!), one of the behavioral health centers there hired her PRN to get her in the door. 3 weeks later, then full-time music therapist put in her notice, and my daughter got bumped to the big chair. She's doing what she was meant to do, and it shows every time we talk to her.

Hey, *raises a beer* that's awesome.
Our son did exactly the same, and they also set a date in '27.
Skål!

So my son has paranoid schizophrenia, and is under guardianship in NH because he tried to run down a few cops a few years ago. He has been doing so incredibly well in this program there. He is now in a group home on site of the hospital and will be there for some time. He has been there two years so far but in state custody since 2020.

Anyway the facility had an open house yesterday and I was finally able to attend. Drove 3 hours one way and 5 hours in a snow storm to get home. He was so proud that i was there, he introduced me to his friends and to his workers, they had a craft fair, i bought a bunch of stuff, food, they had a choir of residents, they had door prizes, it was so nice. We had such a great day together. Went nad got him some christmas presents and then when it started snowing he made me leave because his anxiety was high about me getting home safely.

This program is amazing, not only is it medication management, life skills and all but they do classes that he enjoys. He actually meditates on his own now, gives himself some slack and they did a how coffee is made class that he still talks about.

He met a peer support person, someone with mental health issues who is doing well, and this guys name is Joy, he is a massive hippie and has just been such a huge part of Ps recovery. Its a perfect match because of course we have the hippie history in my family.

it was amazing to spend such a good day with him. I sat in the truck after I left and cried. There were times through his journey that I honestly thought he was either going to kill me or someone else, so this was a very special day.

That is great to hear! Thanks to your sharing over the years, we've all been able to follow his progress and/or regress. I'm glad he's doing well and glad that you got to go visit.

This is the kind of stuff this thread needs.

Today, the kids are hitting the road to spend a few days in NOLA with the other kids. I know that the 2 biologically related ones have been looking forward to this for a while, since that's all they talk about when we do a group facetime. The other great thing is that each kid absolutely loves the other's partner. Clay and Jack bond over music and cooking, and Allie and Megan are attached at the hip whenever they're together.

I'm sure there will be much laughing and happiness. Then in a few weeks, the NOLA group will be back up here for the holidays, so more happiness. Then it's only a few weeks after that when we all pack up and go on vacation together.

I'm not sure who's more excited.

My mom just called me in crisis.
She's down in Texas snowbirding with my dad
and she's reached her limit with his verbal abuse.
So we're figuring out how to get her on a flight back up here.
They're both mid-70s and suffering the declines of aging
and it has been making my dad mean and she's had enough.

Glad I'm around and available. All my brothers have their own families and lives.

Today I helped Green register with the selective service. He got a letter in the mail.
He said it was a smack in the face that he is an adult and might have to kill someone else and he cried.
We talked for about 30 min about what it means to register, to not register, what to do if they do install a draft.

I do want to add that I recently found out if you do not register for the draft you can not get a student loan, funding for other trainings, food supplement, and if it is still there, social security when you retire.

You have to register by age 24 I believe.

News from ODs house, we have a date for the boy child and his sweet girl to be wed. October 2027 is the plan, they both wanted a fall wedding. The venue has a wonderful outdoor space if it's nice and a big barn-like indoor space if it's not.
https://www.3fatlabs.net/

The girl child and SIL to-be got to experience their first Mardi Gras the other day. Last year they had just moved down to NOLA and were still getting squared away, so they didn't get to go out and be a part of it. We got pics and videos of a parade they were in, that stopped at 3 different places to get drinks, and lots of texts.

Last month, we all took a cruise together and had the best time. My wife and I felt the best part was watching the four of them having fun together.

My baby turned 5 this week and he's definitely growing up too fast.
I'm worried i'll blink and he will be out of high school and voting, too!
