Arizona desert ironwood burl. Bought it once when I was board
Making Stuff - Woodworking, 3D Printing, Metalwork etc.
Time to finish fixing/replacing my lathe motor so I can make some parts out of delrin for my Volkswagen.
I could just buy replacement parts but where is the fun in that?

When I bought it, my goal was to one day turn it into a chin rest and finger board for a violin - parts normally made of ebony. I have absolutely zero reason to believe I was capable of doing it but it must have seemed like a good idea at the time. It's really neat looking wood.
Aside from purchasing the board, not much progress on the whole project. The bad parts of the wood make the finger board part probably impossible. But if I got a chinrest of two out of it, I don't have any plans for the leftovers. Too bad I don't know any people with fancy lasers and shit.
all i have is slim cut
see that was a crazy f5
it would have been funny, and still is, but it could have been better, no thanks to y’all’s yappin

I’m willing to pay someone to get this idea turned into reality by the way. And this is in no way a weird ploy to find out your location so I can steal your lasers.

Are you wanting a finished thing produced from it or it cut into something you can finish?
I have never had the slightest idea how to start the actual project and most recently have just been using it as a fun thing to mess with you
And I’m a fan of lasers. Frankly don’t trust anyone who ain’t.

I’d pay to turn the block into a finished product.
No delusions on my part that anybody would read this and be like “yeah I’ll just knock that out for ya”. It’s just I’ve started wishing for shit more often and have gotten lucky sometimes
In my head your like the B A Barracus of fazed. He got shit done. lol

Made this for my valentine.
1" thick 304 stainless that I plasma cut with 70 amps (not enough)
to produce that cool-ass whack-ass meteor-ass edge character,
then surface ground it flatter than nickel tits (which my surface grinder hated)
then engraved it perfectly centered with my galvo fiber laser.
It's kinda goofy and messed up but that's me, babyyyyy.
It was fun to combine an extremely rough process (inadequately powerful plasma cutting)
with an extremely precise process (surface grinding is the most common precision tool-making process).
The stainless is from a time capsule cover I made for Red Wing boots
which is supposed to last for 120 years so maybe that's a sign?????

Made a set of ring gauges for a flute maker.
11mm to 20mm in .1mm increments.
Had to use the .2mm nozzle and had a lot of failures.
my mind tried to get my fingers to hit keys and tumble around that image
looks good but give me depth or give me death

I thought I was looking at different sized pulley wheels
Not that different, just an opposite revolved profile.
ur an opposite revolved profile
Took a hollow shaft with a worm gear in the middle of it
and forged it into a wee dish.
Thank u.
not nearly big enough for all my wee
correct, it is but a wee wee dish
oui
the peebowl are gonna be pissed about this one

I bought a $200 planer maybe 10 years ago and while it has probably gone beyond what would be expected of it... it's kind of done. It can't push the chips out of itself, even with a shopvac attached and the last time I was planing something, I could hear it kinda jumping and flexing, which is not good
Anyway, I've got a birthday coming up and I think its time to upgrade a tool and with a lot more cabinetry to go, this is probably the move.
I've never had a jointer (other than a tiny handheld electric jointer) but I've had this 12" planer that I've been able to make do with. Looking at Busy Bee Tools, I can get a helical 12.5" or 13" (why they need both of those sized i'm not sure) planer for $600-$700 but they also have a 8" helical Jointer/Planer combo for $600
I'm a little torn, perhaps having a jointer would be nice... though I've never needed one... I doubt I've ever jointed anything 8" wide, but it would be nice to have it, and of course having 12 or 13" wide just means i can go longer without rotating/changing the cutters
I dunno. Thoughts?

helical is a no brainer if you're well funded
you could also buy the basic and do the swap yourself
I have an 8" jointer with straight knives and of course it works fine and replacing the blades is a pain (squaring is the issue but nothing impossible with a little attention and a shop made jig)
but my next jointer which is next on the list, will have a helical head one way or the other. I'm tired of having to clean up those little straight knife chip groves you end up with on your milled stock
I don't buy new machines if i can help it so i can't speak for current brands. I like that old heavy wartime shit that's easy to service and lasts forever.
the advantage of a wide jointer bed is face jointing stock for the planer. Again - 100 ways to do it without one. But if you have the money and space, it's a no brainer imo in any semi serious shop space
jointer/planers are cool, but I've only used one worth a damn and it was an old japanese brand that's coveted and i can't remember the name. great for smaller shops obv. But i prefer to be able to walk both ways around a planer if i need and the ones that do the transformer flippy thing seem a little too articulated to not get sloppy

i would go helical in a planer obvs. Noise output reduction is a huge benny
oh and the big bonus for a helical jointer
if you stick a finger in it, you don't really need to do any cleanup. She gone baby
