House ('Hausu') (1977)

Hadn't seen it in years. It's kind of a mess, but fun.

Anaconda

Even a mid-budget comedy looks cheap these days. This was a contractually obligated project for Jack Black and Paul Rudd, and it shows. Nothing works, jokes fall flat. it's B- and C material from Tropic Thunder at best

Also, must Jack Black sing in everything? No one likes it. Can't he take the hint from watching what happened to Ed Helms career?

Don't watch this.

But it's great to see Ione Skye acting again. She still looks incredible. I guess she did this so she could keep her SAG health insurance.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Rian Johnson Movie (2025) - I thought this was pretty damn good. I liked the big change in tone/direction that it took from the second Benoit Blanc movie. I also liked the detective not showing up until like nearly halfway through the movie. Brolin was really good as head priest and so was this O'Connor guy playing the young priest.

The Phoenician Scheme (2025) - I don't think I can remember a second of this... Well, I remember Benicio ordering people around and the Wes Anderson style... but I can't remember the plot at all. I guess I liked Michael Cera as a little weirdo hanging around and Benicio is always great.

Predator (1987) - It was aight. I didn't feel like, "Oh fuck this is what I've been missing all these years?" I got bored during the extended actions scenes... the opening was the best.

The Informant! (2009) - One of them Soderbergh's I've been meaning to see. It was really good, I liked the slow reveal of Damon's shit that's constantly hinted at through the movie but not outright told until like the last third or whatever. It's also insane about how much was based on the true events... like I thought some of it would be... not damn near all of it. The little banal narrated bits ala American Psycho were great too.

The Iceman (2012) - Hmm, out of this current list, this might have been my favorite. Been a huge Michael Shannon fan for a while now and this character is perfect for him... almost too perfect. The scenes where his brother confronts him about his nature are great. Liotta plays the unhinged big bad well like he always does, and Winona Ryder was good as his love interest and supportive wife. At 67% RT I think it's pretty underrated, but the ending probably has a lot to do with that. One of many based on true stories on this current list.

Overload (2018) - This was a lot better than I was expecting. Like the sets, action, effects etc. were all really polished, it would be a nice-to-look-at WW2 flick on its own if not for the twist alt-history stuff. The paratrooper plane scene was especially good. Critics said it was very video-gamey and I agree, but that's what made it fun and good tbh.

Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) - Eh... Not good. The story behind the production and the tragedy is more interesting than the movie. I did like Lithgow's "there's something on the wing!" even though Shatner's is more iconic. Spielberg's segment was kinda ass, but the story goes that he half-assed it on purpose after the disaster during Landis's.

Breaker Morant (1980) - Another true story. Australia's most acclaimed movie, still? I liked the way the story was structured with the court case and recollections. This is the movie that made me realize that there's like a whole subgenre of court movies for military courts and I've liked them all. Kubrick's Paths of Glory is the obvious one, and The Caine Mutiny (or the recent sequel), A Few Good Men... but I'd also put In the Name of the Rose there with Connery... which is neither military nor court, but has that same style of kabuki/kangaroo court that's doomed from the start. Basically any movie where the prosecuting team or judge is like "How dare you impugn ..." ... Even Inherit the Wind maybe, the scopes-monkey trial one from 1960.

Marty Supreme (2025) - Really fun, great direction and cinematography. Chalamet is unstoppable. It does make me wonder if them Safdie's can do any other kind of movie though, since Good Time, Uncut Gems, and now this one are all about some whirlwind of a character fucking up everybody and everything around them. This didn't make me as anxious as Uncut Gems, but it was written and shot that way, and so was Good Time with Pattinson (check that out if you haven't).

Train Dreams (2025) - "*pause* hold up this movie a square or is something wrong with the video stream? *checks internet* okay it's in 3:2 to make it seem like a vintage photo and to make the trees look tall" Pretty good movie, you almost immediately know where it's going, because that's how all of these man on the frontier movies go. I did like the time component, you know like right away flashing forward to see the giant bridge they toiled on sidelined by a concrete highway. But yeah, it was a beautiful movie and I'm a sucker for historical settings. William H. Macy as the old man of the crew was my favorite of course.

TRON: Ares (2025) - It was decent. The plot kept reminding me of that Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy.

Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) - Bong Joon Ho's first movie... just as wacky as the rest of his stuff, in a good way though, as most of them are. First movie for the lead actress, Bae Doona, who later went on to be in Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending, and the Rebel Moon movies in supporting roles. Probably shouldn't see this if you're sensitive about dogs... I mean I am too, but I guess when it's fiction it doesn't bother me.

Zulu (1964) - Another true story. One of Michael Caine's first big movies and what made him popular. He knocks it out of the park. The many battles in this are really impressive... like LOTR scale without the computer help. Also seems to fit in a theme of recent things I've seen like The Siege of Jadotville and Breaker Morant... non-American Anglo troops getting fucked by high command.

Hellraiser (1987) - Eh, I thought this was going to be better. It was alright, but some people really go nuts with it. "The Cenobites are extra-dimensional sadomasochistic beings who don't differentiate between pain and pleasure. They're not really the bad guys, it's deep!" Apologies if you're someone who's really into it... I didn't hate it or anything, and it didn't gross me out or disturb me (or at least that's not a factor in my meh), just wasn't that great of a flick.

Memories of Murder (2003) - Here it is... my last Bong Joo Ho until The Valley comes out next year. Was good stuff... Korean detective movies, or at least all the ones I've seen, usually are. Also based on a true story. Very pretty movie too.

Perfect Blue (1998) - I kept nodding off, had to actually watch it over two days. The subject matter definitely feels way ahead of it's time, because it's so much more relevant nowadays, but it just didn't really capture me. Same guy made Paprika and I liked that a lot more. I have his Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers on my watchlist too. I am forever in search of the the Akira feeling... I want like a high-production gritty, late 80s, feature length anime movie that isn't Gundam/SailorMoon/supernatural school kids thing. This was close in that it eschewed that kind of anime and had serious subject matter... but I'm still looking.

I also went and saw all three LOTR extended editions when they re-released in theaters over MLK weekend. I knew a lot about the extra scenes, but had never seen any of the extendeds fully. It was fun and worth it seeing them in theaters. Legendary movies.

The Monkey was very funny. Did I already say that?

Rabbs, so far from your list, we've watched Malignant. M was a fan, and I was too, until the end when it got so corny that all I could do was laugh at it, which M didn't appreciate. It's not uncommon for me to think horror movies are just straight up corny, but I'm trying to like them. I'm glad, too, because I've seen some good ones.

Oh, a couple of days ago we watched Color Out of Space (2019) and we both dug it.

Yeah, I read about how they made the actor practice moving as Gabriel, and I was like, okay, but it still looks wack.
I suspect they were just trying really hard to not look like B-movie body horror, but, like, come on, man. You got a head in your head.

The Last Winter (2006) [trailer]

Ron Perlman and Connie Britton. Not sure how this escaped me.
Small crew trying to set up rigs in the Arctic.
Inevitable The Thing vibes, but takes a starkly different turn.

Best Wishes To All (2023) [trailer]

Another one that was strongly reminiscent of a famous story, and then was suddenly somehow worse and more tragic.
Really good and beautifully shot.

house (1977)

there were lots of special effects some of them very effective and some really corny
when the house really starts going off the rails was the most impressive

Kung Fu is best character.

i agree she was easily the best character and

Spoiler saved everybody and deserved better and thought for sure that was the end of the movie when she was just kicking the crap out of the house
even her dismembered legs fought til the bitter end

the soundtrack was maybe the most insane thing about it for me, for example like the character of the music being played when they're scared, or wondering what mysterious things are going on and it's like a ho-down or 70s j-pop disco playing lol

Kung Fu's music is so sick too haha. Yeah so that one weird scene of the town with that kinda cool bubble gum rock song, I guess was a band that was super famous in Japan at the time, called Godiego. Been meaning to check some of their shit out.

8 1/2 (1963)

this movie is mentioned so much on those criterion closet reviews and it's finally on a streaming service i have

i really really enjoyed it and would have to watch it again if i wanted to say anything interesting about it
there were a few parts where you're just smiling hard and you don't exactly know why, one in particular is the incredible introduction of saraghina and the absolutely bananas music
from that point on it could have done anything and still been an instant favourite movie
also a few scenes later, guido and luisa and rosella are sitting on the patio when gloria (his mistress) shows up in a horse and carriage while some bastardized version of sabre dance is playing, or maybe it was actually sabre dance, and luisa and guido have a pretty serious argument and everything just hits at once and i started laughing almost uncontrollably it's so well done

would recommend if you've never seen it and just sort of see what happens to you while watching

It's just so cool. I wanted to live in that movie.
And it looks so good too. 8 1/2 is a stunningly beautiful film.

Mastroianni is among the great cool actors, alongside Belmondo, Delon, McQueen and Newman.
Just unapologetically cool. Without an iota of irony to share between them. They are playing guys who are going through hell, but you still want to be them so bad.

Every time I watch this film, I wanna get fitted for a new suit and pick up smoking again.
