MLB - Triumph and Tragedy in Mudville

We can be friends :).

I always pay attention to the staff and I never really realize that I did it. My grandmother knew each manager of each team and was very critical of certain teams (mainly the Yankees, the Dodgers, and the Rockies). I never really knew why she did that, and I guess I just like to know who to complain to when they sell a good player or pull some bullshit.

I have also noticed a lot of rockies/giants fans at games I don't know why either.

ROCKTOBER IS BACK BABY

Leading all game and losing to a walkoff HR is classic suckass rockies baseball

I haven't bought rockies merch in over a decade and have never paid for tickets in the same frame (been gifted them). There was the tiniest modicum of hope of change this offseason but anyone paying attention still knows that it won't be actually solved til the monforts sell

I actively hate the Twins because they suck and their ownership is the actual worst.

I guess that's where I'm stumped - I've heard this About the owners before. I don't know what their deal is or why their shitty ownership is killing the team. And I mean this in a genuine question - what do they do that kills the team so bad?
From: sanka #56
Date: 03/30/26 @ 11:41 PM
They spend nothing. They never do anything in free agency. They are the worst owners in all of MLB and everyone knows it.

I'm an old guy who grew up on WGN or TBS anyway. I still want the home team to do well, but I'm a Cubs guy reall.

I mean, the Ricketts are also not wonderful but they give the appearance of trying.

But to the question, generally when owners are heavy-handed and don't listen to wiser voices, they get into a "dig up, stupid" pattern. Arte Moreno and the Monforts come to mind. The Twins seem to have a development and retention problem, but I'm sure sanka is more familiar with the situation.
There are more heavy-handed owners like the Steinbrenners and Cohen but they're more concerned with the brand than their ego and enrichment (like the Wilpons or Loria, or Reinsdorf).

Giants ownership does suck but they do a pretty good job of delegating and not attracting attention to themselves.

Seattle signs Colt Emerson (20) to an 8yr, 95MM deal (11.875 AAV) with a 9MM club option.

Assuming he's everything they're betting on, that feels like a pretty significant underpay.
But it's guaranteed, so good for him.

I like when teams make deals like that to lock guys down.

Security for the player, a gamble for the team, a show of public confidence for the fans, I don't really see a downside except jeopardizing the player's shot at a free agent payday, but again, that's their call.

My grandmother's life ambition (in the 90's - 00's) was to own a baseball team - specifically the Yankees, so she could throw Joe Torre off the upper deck. When Joe Torre left and went to the dodgers she was satisfied with that and went back to cheering for the Yankees. I never understood that because I didn't watch the Yankees or give a shit about them. I always thought Torre was a good manager but she was always mad because he had good players but was a dick about using them properly? (Maybe??)

She taught me about the importance of management and base coaches - and closers. She knew all the umps by name and had no problem writing to the owners of teams and letting her know what she saw.

Thank you for explaining that about the owners. Maybe I'll start paying attention like my grandmother and write these mother fuckers some letters.

(Thank you for putting up with me waxing poetic about my grandmother. Her birthday is tomorrow but she passed away 3 years ago and I miss her a lot this time of year).

They finally hired ONE PERSON from outside the org the offseason this was written.

Thank you for posting that katfude. It's true. I'm watching the game right now (they are playing the bluejays) and it just feels embarrassing. It's the top of the 9th and people in Toronto aren't sticking around because they know they will win.
I guess it's time to start boycotting these restaurants that this douchebag owns until we start winning some games. Or he sells. The more I read about him the more I hate him.

What's everyone think of the ABS system so far? It's not perfect, but seems like a step in the right direction given some of the egregious calls I've seen overturned already.

It will definitely need tuning up, but you have to try it before you figure out how.
I like it. It's confirming what most people already knew:
The tech will need to get better, and umpires are generally better than they get credit for.

The funniest thing that could happen is if a pitcher hits the batter and the catcher taps his helmet.

I guess I'm just old fashioned. Part of the charm of baseball is that it's not precise. Yeah we measure everything, but it's fun to get mad at the umps.

I do think the challenges are getting a bit out of hand. We watched the Royals game yesterday and it was just like, get on with it then!

I am very much a fan of the human element.
I would see an egregious call, or one that hurt my favored team, or screwed the other, and be like, "Haha, wow."
But I am also pro-player, and bad calls hurt players, players in arb, players chasing stats (Dustin Pedroia said if ABS had been in place he probably would have been a .300 career hitter), fringe players who could get sent down or kept on based on little things, so I think it's a clear net positive.

pitch clock
I think this should be between the battery, the ump, and the batter.
I don't need to see a clock. That's none of my business.
From: Heferito - Intentionally left blank #82
Date: 04/03/26 @ 6:49 PM
pitch clock really sucks when you go to a game, it speeds it up too much. You pay so much money to get in there I want it to go on for as long as possible. Plus I don't want to miss an inning just going to the bathroom.

True, part of being at the park is picking your spots. Both when and where to go.
Usually I go when the opposing team is batting, but even then sometimes the pitcher rails the batters 1-2-3 and you're still at the beer cart in the tunnel where no one goes.
From: Scarlet - I like turtles #84
Date: 04/03/26 @ 7:30 PM
I spose that makes sense. ABS can be helpful.
I am not a huge fan of the pitch clock - but I do also see why they implemented it. I think they could add a few seconds to it though.

I bring up the player consideration because I won't argue that it makes the game or product better,
Though I will say that watching the fan reaction to the challenge is pretty funny; they love that shit.

Fans got so sock of the ump show the past few seasons that everyone can appreciate seeing them held accountable. The cheering cracks me up every time.

Eventually, umps won’t call balls and strikes, and you won’t have to worry about challenges

It looks pretty rough for an early spring Saturday.
I don't get the sense that Denver has the transplant/retiree market of, say, Florida or Ohio;
Hopefully someone important is taking notice.

Sorry, just remembered that I checked in yesterday and called out to Ely that hey Phillies were up 10-1 in the fifth inning and then it got to the ninth without a change in scoring and I yelled "I think they lost interest."

Everyone who was born here and lived here left because they were mad about all the transplants that moved here for weed. Primarily from Texas, Pennsylvania, California, and Chicago.

I'd be willing to bet that the transplant to native ratio is closer to 45:55, but I can't be bothered to do any real research.

60% of colorado is transplant population. A lot of which is concentrated around the Denver metro.

They have zero reason to switch baseball allegiances when the rockies suck out loud and the ownership is content to sell beer and giant hot dogs to opposing fans.
