the floating opera by john barth
his first novel written when he was 24 which is crazy to me but i suppose he is just an extremely gifted storyteller
anyway i thought it was brilliant and funny and witty;
it gets powerfully dark and terrifyingly relatable in what i would say is the climax, where he is talking about why we act how we do, still in the same witty and funny way but just dealing with super heavy emotional subj matt
and this whole chapter where he talks about this has already occured, casually in chapter one or two, just now with full perspective and honest home truths about himself if that makes sense it probably doesn't
then short denouement and it's over, great novel i enjoyed it
sot-weed factor is the better story for sure and so much more entertaining but floating opera was excellent

up next on heroes and tombs by ernesto sabato, really looking forward to this one

also first sentence in the afterword was something about "john barth's first remarkable novel almost wasn't published"
and i thought of the post posts thread and was glad he didn't backspace it

mun did you read permutation city? or maybe some other hard sci-fi by greg egan? he seems pretty highly regarded in the sci fi community
embassytown by china mieville? weird, 'literary sci fi' maybe, and i think most days my fav novel by him
or even tunc and nunquam by lawrence durrelll, maybe the softest of sci-fi, but weirdly captivating and in the end i found rewarding; with durrell i was really put off by what seems pedantic and 'purple prose' but i kept reading and realized his writing and storytelling skills are remarkable

I prefer paper books but Amazon emailed last weekend and notified me that they were discontinuing support for the old Kindle I use for ebooks starting next month. Meaning that I would not be able to add any new books to this thing even library or purchased books and it would basically be useless. I still like the kindle for travel and library books are more available.

Anyway yadda yadda yadda i spent 3 days jailbreaking and modding my stupid 12 year old kindle so now i just feel like i should read a book on it. So I'm scrolling around for a book that's old enough to not have a wait at the library that i can read right away. (even though i'm in the middle of reading I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom* and also have to finish reading a bunch of One Piece and a book from a kid's series called the Warriors to catch up with my kids' reading).

Anyway i usually hop between modern fiction, scifi/fantasy, and nonfiction narratives (like Killers of the Flower Moon) type thing. So i guess i'm looking for good sci fi or a good nonfiction story. Any recs?

*I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom - this book is ok. I'm having trouble finishing it because like i'm enjoying it while i read it i guess but i mostly don't care about anyone in it. I think it's a little too pandering to the millennial dude audience? Maybe its because i just finished [b]Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow[b] which was also kind of pandery to millennial dudes and i need a break.

I may have had too much coffee today.

Kindle books you've bought are still yours and transferable from device to device as far as I know. I don't have a Kindle device, but I have the Kindle app on my iPad and iPhone and I've gone through several, but my books are always there.
I've go the KU subscription and even ones I've saved transferred.

If I read Permutation City, it was a long time ago.
Thank you for the recommendations, I will look into them.
Except for the three body problem. That was terrible.

I mostly only read ebooks when the wait at the library is shorter for the ebook than the physical book. Which won't work on my 12yo kindle.

Also that means i don't read enough ebooks to really justify buying a new one. Plus like the thing fuckin works great. It just needs to do one thing - show words on this easy-on-the-eyes screen and it does that fine there's no reason to brick them. Fuck.

I enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to this forum since it is about relationships between some Young Gen X/Xennial video game fans so all the references are basically written for us. And i thought it was actually well written and interesting.

whaaaaaaaaaaat
all three books or just the first one?

with regards to greg egan stuff, waygroovy read a bunch and that's how i heard about it; my general thoughts were that he's an ok writer (better than snowcrash legend neal stephenson or whatever his name is) but has some really cool ideas, some of which are here today

i have another egan short book called 'perihelion summer' which i think is about black holes

i haven't seen the show but for the conceptual ideas at least i think it was worth a read

I read the first two books and was disappointed by both.
I know that I'm the only one who feels this way, but I stand by my assessment.

I decided to run a special for my latest novel and give away free Kindle copies for a few days starting tomorrow, Sunday 4/19.
If you don't have a Kindle device, the app is free and frankly works just as well.

Might not be what you all would reach for first, but at least it's free :)
